ABOUT ME

Artist’s Statement

“Why should anyone believe an artist who inveighs against the way the environment is treated yet whose own work gives ashes instead of beauty?"  Arthur C. Danto, "Beauty to Ashes" Regarding Beauty:  A View of Late Twentienth Century Art, by Neal Benezra and Olga M. Viso

As an artist, setting up a dialogue in my paintings between historical paintings and methods and my personal experiences is a prime motivator for me. As a professor of art history as well as painting, I have many opportunities to explore symbols and techniques from cultures past and present.

Created in a historical technique of grisaille and glazes, the oil paintings have depth and luminosity, and are often focused on the beauty and mystery of the natural realm.

Current paintings depict my experiences in the natural world:  water, woods, and the transcendent symbolism of birds in flight.

Contact me if you are interested in painting classes using these techniques in acrylic or oil painting.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the availability of a painting or

the price.  See the Contact page located at the top of this screen.
